Landlord and Tenant Issues
In Michigan

This web site is designed to inform both tenants and landlords of their rights and responsibilities.  There are several Michigan laws affecting residential leases.

Court forms are available for free Here.

Educate yourself about residential landlord and tenant issues by browsing through the laws and links on this web site.  However, reading a Michigan statute is not a substitute for seeing an attorney if you need legal advice.

For a copy of some Michigan laws related to eviction and "Summary Proceedings," look at MCL 600.5701.  The law starts with the letters "MCL" which stands for Michigan Compiled Laws.

For a Michigan law saying the premises have to be fit for use, look at MCL 554.139.

For a Michigan law explaining how a tenant can withhold the rent and move elsewhere if the place is not fit for human beings, see MCL 125.530.  A city or township can evict the tenant if the place is not fit for human habitation.

General information about the security deposit laws, inventories required when a tenant moves in, and other landlord-tenant relationships, is found in MCL 554.601.

When the tenant has lived in the unit for 13 months or more, and is disabled or needs a senior housing center, perhaps MCL 554.601a might apply.

The Michigan Supreme Court has established certain court rules that apply to evictions, such as MCR 4.201 et. seq.
